El Niño in Brazil: Dry North, Flooded South, and What It Does to Coffee

Brazil is the clearest example of why "El Niño impact" is a meaningless phrase without a map. The same event that floods Rio Grande do Sul dries the Amazon and the northeast. Any national average is the average of two opposite signals, and it tells you nothing useful.

With El Niño declared in June 2026 and a forecast peak in October-December, both halves of that split are in play through the coming growing season.

The two Brazils

The south gets wetter. Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina and Paraná sit where El Niño strengthens the subtropical jet and steers moist Atlantic air inland. Spring and early summer rainfall runs above normal. In moderate events this is straightforwardly good for soy and maize. In strong events it tips into flooding, waterlogged fields and harvest delays, and the benefit turns into a logistics problem.

The north and northeast get drier. The displaced Walker circulation puts descending air over the Amazon basin and the semi-arid northeast. Rainfall deficits, low river levels and elevated fire conditions follow. The severe Amazon droughts of 1997-98, 2015-16 and 2023 all coincided with warm Pacific conditions, and low water on the major tributaries is not only an ecological problem — it is a transport one, because barge traffic on the rivers carries grain.

Flowering, around September and October, sets the size of the following year's harvest. Cherry filling in the months after determines bean size and quality. Heat and moisture stress at either point reduces next season's crop, not this one.

Sugarcane in São Paulo state follows a similar logic on a shorter cycle: the crush depends on both cane volume and sucrose content, and both respond to rainfall distribution more than to totals.

Soy and maize: the counterintuitive part

Brazilian soy is concentrated in Mato Grosso, Goiás and the south, not in the drought-exposed northeast. In most El Niño years that geography works in Brazil's favour — the south gets the extra rain, the centre-west stays close to normal, and national soy output holds up or improves.

This is why El Niño years in South America are often bearish for soy prices rather than bullish: Brazil and Argentina together frequently produce more under El Niño, not less. The risk is not drought but excess — rain at harvest that degrades quality and delays the second-crop maize planting window.

What to watch through this event

The signal to follow for Brazil is not the headline index but the spring rainfall distribution in Minas Gerais and the water level on the Amazon tributaries. The first decides the 2027 coffee crop; the second decides whether the north is in a drought year.
