By NOAA's current outlook, this El Niño peaks in October-December 2026 — 81% odds of reaching "very strong" in that window, 97% odds of the event persisting into early spring 2027. The ocean side of the story is about as settled as seasonal forecasting gets.

How to read a seasonal signal

One rule before the list. El Niño does not schedule weather — it tilts probabilities. Every claim below held in most strong events as a seasonal tendency, and every one of them has been broken by an individual month or storm. The 2015-16 winter opened with record December warmth in the eastern US and still produced a historic January blizzard. Both were the El Niño pattern.

United States

The national picture: a strengthened subtropical jet across the south, milder air across the north.

  • California and the Southwest — the wet side. Storm track aims south; atmospheric-river and flood risk rise with it, along with drought relief.
  • Pacific Northwest — the dry side of the same split: warmer, drier, and the snowpack pays, with the bill arriving in summer 2027 streamflow.
  • Gulf Coast and Southeast — the most reliable US signal: wet, cool, and carrying the pattern's most underestimated hazard, winter tornado outbreaks.
  • Northeast and Midwest — mildest-leaning, least reliable: lower heating demand and below-normal snow on average, loud exceptions on record.

The rest of the world

  • Australia — drought, heat and bushfire risk through its summer; the SOI confirms whether the atmosphere has coupled.
  • Indonesia, Southeast Asia and the Philippines — the dry side of the Pacific seesaw: drought stress, late monsoon onset, reservoir drawdown that peaks after the event does.
  • India — the monsoon link, already largely expressed for 2026.
  • East Africa — the wet exception on the African map: enhanced short rains with flood risk.
  • Southern Africa — the dry one: the strongest drought signal in the hemisphere, aimed at the maize belt through roughly December-February.
  • South America — split three ways: Peru and Ecuador flooding, Brazil divided between a dry north and wet south, Argentina usually on the favourable side of the pattern.

The event itself is near-certain: NOAA gives 97% odds that El Niño conditions persist into early spring 2027. The regional impacts are probabilities, not promises — El Niño shifts the odds of each regional pattern, and every event expresses them differently. 2015-16 diverged from 1997-98 in real ways. When do the impacts actually arrive?
Later than the peak. The ocean event peaks around October-December 2026, but most regional winter impacts express through January-March 2027, and some — Southeast Asian drought stress, Philippine reservoir drawdown, snowpack-driven river deficits — land hardest in the following spring and summer. The event ending does not end the bill.
Which regional signals are the most reliable?
Historically strongest: wetter winter across the US Gulf Coast and Florida, drier conditions over Indonesia and northern Australia, wetter East African short rains, and a suppressed Atlantic hurricane season. Weakest and most variable: the US Northeast, Europe, and the exact northern edge of the California-Northwest storm-track split.

Is the event still being fed?

Warm water piles up below the thermocline before it ever reaches the surface, so the upper-300 m heat content leads Niño 3.4 by roughly one to three months. A reservoir that keeps filling under a flat surface means more warming is still to come; one that drains means the event is running out of fuel however warm the surface still looks.

The eastern half is the half that surfaces first, and it currently reads 2.96 °C — up on the month, so the reservoir is still filling.
