Every El Niño carries its own expiry logic. These events are not open-ended states that wander until something stops them — they are a coupled oscillation with a built-in seasonal clock, and the clock's answer for this event is: peak around October-December 2026, decay through spring, likely gone by early summer 2027.

The decay script
Strong events follow a well-worn arc. The warm anomaly builds through northern autumn, peaks near the turn of the year, and then the spring transition takes it apart: trade winds recover, the thermocline tilts back, and the surface warmth drains away over a few months.
Both modern super El Niños ran the script to the month. 1997-98 peaked in November-December 1997 and was gone by May 1998 — one of the fastest collapses on record. 2015-16 peaked in November-January and dissipated through spring 2016. Neither lingered into a second winter at strength.
Watch the decay begin before the headlines say so: the subsurface heat content — the reservoir under the surface — turns down before the weekly index does. It is the closest thing to an early-warning gauge for the event's end that public data provides.
Ending is not the same as over
A caution that the analogs teach: several of the event's largest impacts land after the peak, during the decay. Philippine reservoir drawdown, Southeast Asian drought stress, the snowpack-deficit bill in Pacific Northwest rivers — these express in the first half of 2027 even as the index falls.
